Love Blogs to Johannes

My Favorite Musician This Summer

August 21, 2009 · 1 Comment

This title has just been awarded to Halifax’s own Joel Plaskett.  Mr. Plaskett has been dangerously close to overthrowing Wilco (favorite band of the past two consecutive summers) for some time now. This summer, the title of my favorite musician has been between Joel,  Wilco, Matt and Kim, The Great Lake Swimmers, and Regina Spektor. This evening I was on his website reading  the “news” section where I found this little video gem that was the ultimate decision maker.

I absolutely love this video! JP kind of reminds me of a young Bobby D here; the way he chuckles throughout the song. I was most entertained by it because I do all of my best writing at night (none of which makes it onto the blog because my poetry, short stories, and other umm.. “serious” writing is too personal and I’m not ready for that kind of exposure yet…ahh! anxiety attack just thinking about it) so I can totally relate to JP’s issue with simotaneous morning sunlight and artistic exposure. I am 100% a night person and have two early morning  jobs that make 9am look like a serious sleep-in. Looks like Joel might be even worse off than I am. Poor fellow. I’d love to “shoot the shit” with Mr. Plaskett and discuss why I like the lyrical value of a song  just as much, if not more than the instrumentals– which he declares preference for in one of my favorite JP songs, “Penny for Your Thoughts”. How silly that I assume the speaker in this Ashtray Rock song  reflects all of JP’s opinions and convictions. This is probably not the case.

If the subject of this post were ever to read this blog he might get sort of creeped out by my massive fan crush. I could totally understand why as I’ve been noticing some creepy trends in blog stats as of late. Looks like I have some out of country readers who’s ip addresses frequent my blog a little more than I’m comfortable with. I should probably just be flattered that some people have taken an interest in my meager little life but I can’t seem to get used to their blog frequenting– yet. I guess the point of this is so people can read it. Too bad I’m so nervous about..well.. everything. How unfortunate that I don’t share Joel’s seemingly adorable and charming personality. He seems so comfortable with his work and performances. It will be ages before I will be able to make my late night musings available for public scrutiny.

In the mean time you can just listen to “Drunk Teenagers” by JP and perhaps feel inspired to buy some of Joel’s albums and forget all about the fact that I’m doing a terrible thing and holding out on my devoted readers. Here is the link.
